In Charles Todd’s mystery, A Fine Summer’s Day, police inspector Ian Rutledge is a World War I veteran. This book tells the stories of his flashbacks to the first day of the war which also happened to be the day Rutledge proposed to the love of his life. The World War II themed novel will be our fourth Maggie Hope mystery, The Prime Minister’s Secret by Susan Elia MacNeal. Maggie Hope, an American math prodigy stranded in London as World War II begins, goes to work for Winston Churchill and soon becomes a spy. Maggie looks forward to teaching at a school for spies but comes out of retirement to learn why famous British ballerinas are falling ill. The alternative selection will be Big Little Lies by Laine Moriarty, in which an elementary school’s fundraising Trivia Night has ended in a shocking riot: one parent is dead. As police investigate what appears to have been a tragic accident, signs begin to indicate that this devastating death might have been a cold-blooded murder. Registration is required. 630.483.5600. Donation: Free.
